Is there a technology in Laser Tape Measures which differs from the ones in Laser Range Finders (ToF or Triangulation)?

It seems that Laser Tape Measures are less expensive than any Laser Range Finder which I can find with equivalent accuracy (3 mm). It is common to find tape measures with 3 mm accuracy up to 50 m for 30€, while the range finders I could find with an accuracy below 5% are all above 100€.

I'm only interested in the sensor and not in the whole device. One option would be to reverse engineer a laser tape, such as HERE, but I believe that there must be a more elegant solution for that. Am I looking for the wrong kind of sensor?

Thank you for your help!
