Many external combustion engines working on the stirling cycle have been designed. Theoritically they have an efficiency equal to the Carnot efficiency but are unable to reach it experimentally. How can we improve them and what kind of improvements are we expected to see taking into consideration that NASA is developing a kilopower based on nuclear fission and stirling technology?
