Feb 11, 2015 at 16:35 comment added Richard @Nicholas: I have needed to know the Fourier series of a theoretical signal. I have used FFTs in signal processing. I have used Laplace less often, but textbooks on control theory are full of them. When building matching circuits I have taken S-parameters (complex reflection and transmission coefficients) off instruments, into MATLAB or a circuit simulator and done arithmetic on them. I have needed to understand the relationship between convolution and Fourier products when designing digital filters.

Maybe they help you understand, but at the end of the day do you use the math? You said that you have to calculate by complex numbers, do you do this with calculus as well?
