Dec 27, 2020 at 20:54 | comment | added | ArgisIsland | Thanks both for the updates. Maybe the last time I checked was too long ago, but I read at several plant pages that thermal oil was used, not mentioning salt/nitrate. Is that a more recent trend? Anyway, I'd like to accept both of your answers, but Mike's nudged me in the right direction, so I favor his answer and upvote kamran's.

Dec 27, 2020 at 8:37 | comment | added | Solar Mike | Check out the Shell Durotherm series of oils - up to about 300 deg C , not really an oil for a household use...
Dec 27, 2020 at 8:18 | comment | added | Solar Mike | Oils for household uses?? Either you mis-understood the question or have not worked on some solar thermal power systems which do use and have used, oils as the heat transfer fluid. Working on the real systems is much better in terms of experience than just a quick read of wikipedia...
Dec 27, 2020 at 7:34 | comment | added | kamran | @Solar Mike, OP is asking about power plants. the oils in your answer are for household uses. My answer covers the molten salts for industrial scale solar power plants.
Dec 27, 2020 at 6:02 | comment | added | Solar Mike | OP asks about oil, and it has been used. I pointed it out to the op.
