On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Full elections have three phases and an optional fourth phase (Primary):

  1. Question Collection
  2. Nomination
  3. Primary
  4. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

My Site History

I have been a member of this site since it started (and Area 51 before that). Over the past 3.5 years, I have seen both good and bad members come and go. I have seen the site grow greatly.

About Me

I am a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) and Structural Engineer (SE) in various states in the US. I have personally used this site to answer my own questions as well as to learn other interesting topics. Without this site I would not know anything about the details of how engineering is similar or different around the world.

Why I Would be a Good Moderator

I already check the review queue regularly. I want to welcome and teach more new users about the site. We need to grow and keep users in various fields and levels (curious to professional) while making sure that the site stays on topic.

It has been long enough since some basic site norms have been discussed. These topics could be discussed again to get more input from current users.

I feel that the best moderators are active in discussing the site and their opinions, but accepting of the consensus that has been created.

I am passionate about this site. My browser has eight pinned tabs which are always open. Four of them are for this site (my filtered question list, the review page, chat and meta). I usually check in here multiple times a day (though this election has been fantastically ill-timed for me, since I'm currently on vacation).

As moderator, I'll try to keep a reasonably light touch on review items, acting only in obvious cases, though I might keep adding my "this looks like a homework question" comments in cases which I believe should be closed but would rather leave for the community to decide.

I mostly hang around the structural-engineering and mechanical-engineering tags, and will probably mainly continue to do so except for whatever shows up on the Review page, so keep flaggin'!

I'd be very glad to be your moderator, and I hope you wish the same.

This election is over.
